Single Buffer Weights

We carry buffer weights of all types, so folks can mix and match to reach the desired buffer weight. Three hard cast buffer weights are equivalent to two tungsten weights, so there can be a significant cost savings.

Hard Cast Weights

Since most shooters are trying to increase mass, we cast buffer weights in long lengths to eliminte the need for one or more buffer spacer pads.  Spacer pads "steal" about a half of a 10th, so fewer pads = more mass. The length of 2x and 3x weights include the thickness of the pad(s) to maintain proper dimensions relative to a stack of singles.

Tungsten Loose Fill

If you desire a true dead blow buffer, loose fill shot is the answer.  Loose fill tungsten will not be as heavy as a solid tungsten weight, due to airspace between the pellets, but it is still about 50% heavier than steel.

Lead Loose Fill

If weight gain is not a concern, but dead blow is, loose fill lead shot may be the answer.  While lead is typically 50% heavier than steel, airspace surrounding the pellets results in about 15% less total mass, within the same space.

Loose Fill Weight

Pre-filled bags of loose shot are measured by the size of the buffer cavity, based on how many solid weights it can contain, while leaving just enough room for the movement required for dead blow. A 2T/2L =  AR-10 carbine buffer, a 3T/3L = AR-15 carbine, a 4T/4L bag = A5 length buffers, the 5T/5L = AR10 rifle as well as the reduced cavity AR-15 rifle buffers, and a 7T/7L bag = AR-15 full cavity rifle. If you wish to combine solid weight(s) with loose fill, subtract the number of solid weights from the cavity size to determine the size of bag needed to complete the fill.

The MSRx online store inventories the various buffer body kits shown below, shown with the weight of each assembly. A buffer bumper and roll pin are included so all that is necessary is to add the fill.

Below each of the buffer kits is a list of 'recipes' that can be used in order to achieve a particular buffer weight for that particular buffer type, from ingredients that are available in the online store.

A mil-spec AR-15 rifle buffer contains an aluminum spacer and 5 steel weights, so the actual cavity is 7 deep. If maximum flexibility is the objective, these are the buffer bodies that you want.

Some manufacturers are eliminating the aluminum spacer and short throating the cavity. It is advisable to disassemble your buffer prior to ordering to determine how much space you have to work with.

A typical AR-10 rifle buffer has the same size cavity (5) as a short throated AR-15 rifle buffer, and weighs a hair over 5 oz. Just swapping the steel weights for hard cast would add about 1.5 oz.

AR-10 Rifle Buffer

An A5 style buffer cavity accommodates 4 buffer weights. This type of buffer was designed for use in an AR-15 with an extended buffer tube, but they also work in an AR-9 with a standard carbine tube.

The dedicated 9mm PCC buffer body is extended 3/4" to allow for the shorter bolt assembly. Our PCC buffer body kits have a 4 deep cavity. If re-filling your existing buffer check to see what you have.

A standard AR-15 carbine buffer tips the scale at 3 ounces, with 3 steel weights. Simply swapping your 3 steel for 3 hard cast weights will make it an H1. The 2x hard cast + one tungsten = H2.

The heaviest of the three AR-10 carbine buffer body kits available, with extra thick walls and steel construction to maximize weight. This AR-10 carbine buffer cavitity is 2 deep and has a phosphate finish.

Machined from solid stainless steel for maximum durability, these buffer bodies are built to last. Albeit slightly lighter than our phosphate bodies, they also accommodate 2 weights, or 2T/2L loose fill.

There are situations when less mass is actually more desireable, and there is an aluminum AR-10 carbine buffer body that can help make it happen. With a 2L loose fill bag you would be at about 1.9 oz.

Mix and Match

We pour hard cast buffer weights in a variety of lengths to give maximum flexibility of possible combinations. These stacks are for standard carbine buffers, but one can easily extrapolate for longer buffer body cavities. Swap tungsten weight(s) for 1x hard cast, for even more mass.

Symmetry vs Asymmetry

While we haven't seen data that indicates any advantage of 3 separate sliding weights vs a single 3x length buffer weight, or any combination thereof, regarding "dead blow effect", there has been some discussion as to whether differing sized objects of similar density and/or similar sized objects of differing density may accelerate or decelerate at different rates.  Mixing of sizes/weights in the same buffer column may result in a more of a "dead blow effect" than all things being equal. As an added bonus, fewer rubber spacers = more mass. 

Here are examples of possible combinations. Aluminum, steel or tungsten weights can be substituted for 1x hard cast to fine tune a buffer for a specific number.
