Lead Dead
Lead shot is both effective as well as affordable. While lead is 50% heavier than steel, due to the air space surrounding the lead shot, equal volumes of solid steel buffer weights and lead shot will yield about the same weight. But, with the lead shot you have the added benefit of loose fill deadblow performance.

Tungsten
When you need every ounce possible, tungsten may well be the answer, but it doesn't come cheap. At upwards of $150/lb for shot, the cost of that additional ounce or two can get up there. If loose fill dead blow isn't a requirement, our hard cast sliding buffer weights offer similar mass to volume as tungsten shot.
Loose Fill Weight
Pre-filled bags of loose shot are measured by the size of the buffer cavity, based on how many solid weights it can contain, while leaving just enough room for the movement required for dead blow. A 2T/2L = AR-10 carbine buffer, a 3T/3L = AR-15 carbine, a 4T/4L bag = A5 length buffers, the 5T/5L = AR10 rifle as well as the reduced cavity AR-15 rifle buffers, and a 7T/7L bag = AR-15 full cavity rifle. If you wish to combine solid weight(s) with loose fill, subtract the number of solid weights from the cavity size to determine the size of bag needed to complete the fill.
