Lead Dead

Lead shot is heavy, as well as affordable, which makes it an ideal medium for the purpose of "dead blow", be it a sledge hammer or buffer. While lead is 50% heavier than steel, the empty space surrounding lead pellets inside of a buffer result in similar mass as a stack of steel weights, with the added benefit of loose fill deadblow performance.

Tungsten

When you need every ounce possible, tungsten may well be the answer, but it doesn't come cheap. At upwards of $165/lb for tungsten shot, the cost of that additional ounce can be lofty. If loose fill performance isn't an absolute must, MSRx hard cast sliding buffer weights offer similar mass to volume as tungsten shot, for a lot less money.

What is a Hybrid Buffer?

Loose fill shot does provide the best "dead blow" performance, but air space around the individual pellets in a column robs mass, and buffer weight can be critical for proper function. Internal capacity varies with buffer type, but there is no need to fill the entire cavity with pellets to enjoy the advantage of loose fill. Enter the MSRx Hybrid buffers, where we combine hard cast sliding buffer weights with loose fill lead shot for the best of both worlds, additional weight and you still "feel the shake".

Rifle Buffers

An original AR-15 rifle buffer is bored full length (which we refer to as a 7 cavity buffer), typically containing five steel buffer weights as well as a 2x long aluminum spacer, and has the most potential for weight "redistribution".

Some shops have eliminated the aluminum spacer entirely and bore their AR-15 rifle buffers just deep enough for the five steel weights (a 5 cavity buffer), which may be more efficient for medium buffer weight ranges.

The AR-10 rifle buffer is typically bored same as a 5 cavity AR-15 rifle buffer, and has a similar weight capacity. There are other Hybrid combinations available in the online store for these buffers, as well as the AR-15 rifle buffers.

Carbine Buffers

There are also hybrid combinations for shorter buffers, but we like to have a minimum of 1/3 of the contents as loose fill, so options are limited a bit. The MSRx A5 style Hybrid buffer weight falls between the H0 and H1 @ 4.2 oz.

The AR-9 extended PCC blowback buffer body is made of steel, which provides a significant weight advantage over aluminum. The same contents of an A5 style Hybrid buffer gets you 7.5 ounces of PCC buffer, which falls right in the sweet spot for the blowback AR-9.

The MSRx AR-15 Hybrid carbine buffer weight falls right in between carbine and H1, perfect for those who may want a little extra mass to go along with their dead blow.

Loose Fill Weight

Our pre-filled bags of loose shot are portioned by the size of the buffer cavity (based on how many buffer weights it typically contains) while allowing sufficient space for the shifting of ballast required for dead blow performance. 

The 2T/2L bag =  AR-10 carbine buffer; a 3T/3L = AR-15 carbine buffer; the 4T/4L bag = A5 style buffers; a 5T/5L bag = AR10 rifle as well as the 5 cavity AR-15 rifle buffer; and the 7T/7L bag = AR-15 full length (7 cavity) rifle.
